Finding a Record Store
The best place to buy your first record is from a traditional record store. Record stores have a fantastic niche atmosphere and you’ll often find like-minded people inside.
Trying to find one can be difficult but there are plenty around. A great place to try are city centres and their surrounds. If in doubt, a quick web search should let you find your local stores.
The Crate Dig
Most record stores have their vinyl presented in crates. Be prepared to get stuck in and have a look. Part of the fun is not knowing what you’ll find.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll spot a bargain!

Things to look for
- Albums that come with protective sleeves, this will save you time later
- Album artwork that is in good condition, it’s a generally reliable indication that the vinyl inside will be in good nick
- Clean and unscratched vinyl, check the vinyl by holding it to the light and looking for scratches, note that light scratches are generally fine
What you should avoid
- Damaged artwork, this is generally a bad indication of what’s inside
- Ring wear is not ideal
- Warped, dirty or heavily scratched vinyl, this will affect its playability
